By a resolution of the Council of Ministers of the MPR in 1984, an inter-university “Department of Automated Management Systems and Computing Technology” was established at the Polytechnic Institute (PI) — this is considered the starting point for training specialists in Mongolia under the “Software” program.
Initially, subjects such as fundamentals of programming and automated management systems were taught within other majors, and the first enrollment in the standalone “Software” program took place in 1987. The implementing unit was the aforementioned department at PI, and from 1991 it was expanded into the Computer Technology and Management School (KTMS), now a constituent school of MUST. As a result of developments in electronics, the accessibility and use of computing technology — now known as computers — increased, which further boosted the prestige and demand for the Software major. Although many educational institutions opened similar programs based on the Software program originally opened at KTMS, the program implemented by KTMS is regarded as the most prestigious. Over this period, KTMS has trained 994 bachelor's and 144 master's-level specialists in the Software program, forming the core of Mongolia's IT professional organizations and being recognized worldwide. With advances in information technology and changes in the education system, the curriculum has continuously evolved and improved.
